Configuration notes and screencasts for a keyboard-driven Linux desktop.

The first hour on a tiling desktop

Screencast: four keys first — focus, move, split, close. Recorded on my own machine, no audio.

Tiling window managers feel hostile for about an hour, then they feel obvious. The trick is to learn four keys before touching the config file: focus, move, split and close.

Resist the urge to copy an entire dotfiles repository on day one. You will inherit somebody else keybindings and none of their reasons.

A status bar that shows only what you act on

Screencast: trimming the bar down to battery, network and workspace. Chapters in the description on the watch page.

Most status bars are a hobby, not a tool. Battery, network state, and the current workspace cover almost every real decision you make during a working day.

Everything else belongs in a command you run when you actually care.

Making screen sharing work under Wayland

Screencast: portal check first, config second. The black-rectangle case is almost always a missing portal.

Screen sharing under Wayland needs a portal running and a compositor that speaks to it. When sharing shows a black rectangle, the portal is usually missing rather than misconfigured.

Check that the portal service is running for your session before changing anything else.
